Ten days after their last game, a Double OT loss to Caltech, UC Santa Cruz took on the Redlands Bulldogs Wednesday night for a pre-Thanksgiving matchup. The Slugs played even with the Bulldogs to start the game, but could not catch up once Redlands gained a dominant lead in a 72-50 loss.
UC Santa Cruz dropped to 3-3 while the Bulldogs improved to 4-1.
There were three quick lead changes in the first half. But with 12:25 left in the first and the score tied 11-11, Vincenzo Ferrari laid it in to start off Redlands' 23-0 point run. The Slugs had a difficult time getting back on the scoreboard and finally, with 3 minutes left in the first, Ryan Silva was able to knock down two free-throws for UCSC. Patrick Ramos had a sweet three alongside Avri Finch's bucket in the lane to end the half, Bulldogs leading 18-37.
In the second half, the Slugs were able to cut the Redlands lead to 10, 4 minutes in, 42-32. Redlands however was not letting up and went on another 9-0 run that was cut short by Treyson Keating, scoring on the drop-off assist by Ramos, getting UCSC back on the scoreboard at 51-34. The rest of the second half the Slugs were not truly able to get continuous stops on defense or scores on offense. Redlands kept their lead in the second half, finishing 72-50 ahead of the Slugs.
Finch was the top scorer for the Slugs with 14, also grabbing 7 rebounds, and Haakon Ullrich finished with 10 points. Ramos tallied 8 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists on the night, and Senior guard Eric Siegel had 7 points off the bench.
David Menary led Redlands with 14 points.
After a tough loss, the Banana Slugs will be back to work next Tuesday, December 3, against Cal Maritime.
