THOUSAND OAKS (9-27) - The Banana Slugs started a two match trip to Southern California as they took on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. The Kingsmen scored five minutes into overtime and won 1-0.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs tied 2-2 with Chapman University on Friday in Santa Cruz while the Kingsmen lost 2-1 to Pomona-Pitzer in Pomona on Saturday.
In the first half, the two teams would play back and forth soccer. California Lutheran would have both shots on goal in the half but both shots were saved by Andrew Pimentel. The last shot for the Banana Slugs in the half came off the foot of Jacob Myers Norys with 13:44 left in the half but his shot was blocked. The two teams went into the halftime intermission tied at 0-0.
In the second half, back and forth soccer was again the rule. Both teams had six shots in the half while the Kingsmen had a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. The last chance for the Banana Slugs came on a header by Myers Norys with 3:52 left but his shot went just high of the crossbar. The two teams ended regulation tied at 0-0.
In the overtime frame, the Kingsmen would find the back of the net with 4:37 left on a Brandon Kearney shot to the left side of the goal. The loss ended the Banana Slugs' unbeaten streak at three and was the first for the Banana Slugs against California Lutheran since 2013.
Myers Norys had a match high five shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for California Lutheran, Kearney had three shots. Sergio Esquivel got the win for the Kingsmen and Pimentel got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Kingsmen outshot the Banana Slugs 15-9 and the Kingsmen had one more corner kick (5-4) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will complete their trip to Southern California on Sunday as they take on University of Redlands in Redlands. Kickoff is set for 5 pm.
