First half flurry gives men's soccer 2-1 win at Pomona

CLAREMONT (10-19) UC Santa Cruz got goals from Kailas Dhond and Jake Rhodes in the first half and then played outstanding defense the second half to defeat Pomona-Pitzer 2-1 at the Pomona Soccer Field.

The Banana Slugs broke a two-game winless streak to improve to 6-5-2.

UCSC struck first in the 28th minute when Ethan Kingery's through-ball found Dhond, who didn't miss to make it 1-0.

The lead however didn't last as the Sagehens equalized less than two minutes later from Clay Hamilton's goal.

UC Santa Cruz took the lead back for good in the 34th minute, when Rhodes struck home his first career goal from Rory Monninger's pass to cap a wild seven minutes of soccer and send the visiting Slugs into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

"The guys played really well the first half," said head coach Mike Runeare afterwards. "Good pressure on the ball creating a lot of turnovers, and good possession dictating play."

UCSC almost added an insurance goal just 1:19 after the restart, but Keith McCarty's brilliant effort was blocked off the line. Andrew Pimentel had a pair of stops in the 51st and 54th minutes to deny Pomona's best chances at tying. Pimentel had four saves on the day.

UC Santa Cruz return to southern California next weekend for two more SCIAC opponents, starting Saturday the 26th at La Verne.
