Women Finish Second; Men Third at Bay Area Invitational

OAKLAND (10-26) – One day after winning the Slug Shootout, the Banana Slugs traveled to Oakland to take part in the Bay Area Invitational hosted by Mills College in Oakland. Like the Shootout held on Friday, the Banana Slugs' competition featured two NCAA Division II schools, one NCAA Division III school and one NAIA school.

In the men's competition, the Banana Slugs had participants finish in the top five in all fourteen events that took place. Individually, freshman Akira Morita (200-yard backstroke) had the best finish of the day for the Banana Slugs as he won his event in 2:01.76. He was also fourth in the 100 back in 56.38. Jack Schertler was second in the 200 Fly in 1:59.96, just 0.58 seconds from the winner. Max Manwaring-Mueller was second in the 50 freestyle  in 22.44.

As a team, the Banana Slugs' best finishes were the 200-yard freestyle relay (Manwaring- Mueller, Marc Pugeda, Sam Smith, Paul Ogle-Sporer) and 800-yard freestyle relay (Smith, Jacob Juico,  Gavin Hollis, and Victor Sowa) as they both finished third in those events.

The women's team placed in the top ten in thirteen of the fourteen events contested and had team members finish in the top five in ten of those events. Individually, Aly Roberts (18:15.56 in 1650-yard freestyle) had the best finish of the day for the Banana Slugs as she finished second. Other standouts were Emily Claridge placing fourth in the 200 Fly (2:15.39) and Izzy Blue fourth in the 50 free in 25.46, just 1.43 seconds from Angela Gilardi's school record set in 1995. As a team, the 400-yard medley relay of Elisabeth Lundgren, Kenya Lam, Clairidge, and Blue had the highest finish, placing third in 4:11.65. The 800 Free relay squad of Ocelli Rivers Altieri, Lundgren, Roberts, and Paris Sinclair was fourth in 8:19.21.

In the men's team competition, NCAA Division II member Biola University won for the second straight year with 899.50 points with the Banana Slugs second with 763.50 points. In the women's team competition, NCAA Division II member CSU East Bay won with 891 points while the Banana Slugs finished third with 375 points. Biola won the overall competition with 1,719.50 points while the Banana Slugs finished second with 1,138.50 points.  

The next event for the Banana Slugs will be Saturday November 2nd as they will take on San Jose State University and University of the Pacific in San Jose.
