THOUSAND OAKS (1-4) – The Banana Slugs hit the pool for the first time in the 2020 calendar year as they participated in the Chris Knorr Invitational hosted by California Lutheran University. The Banana Slugs' competition included one NCAA Division II school, three NCAA Division III schools and one NAIA school.
In the men's team competition, UC Santa Cruz won with 761.5 points. In the women's team competition, NCAA Division II member Biola University won with 766.5 points while the Banana Slugs finished second with 528.5 points. Biola won the overall competition with 1,401 points while the Banana Slugs finished second with 1,290 points.
In the men's competition, the Banana Slugs had participants win six of the fifteen events and had participants finish in the top five of all fifteen events. Individually, Paul Ogle-Sporer had a pair of victories in the two-day competition: the 50-yard freestyle (21.96 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (48.21 seconds). Sam Smith also won the 200 free in 1:45.51. In the relays, the Banana Slugs had their best finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the team of Smith, Jacob Juico, Victor Sowa and Ogle-Sporer finished second in 3:15.77.
In the women's competition, the Banana Slugs had participants finish in the top ten in all fourteen events that took place and had members of the team finish in the top five in thirteen of those events. Individually, Izzy Blue won two events : the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.02 and 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.37. The Banana Slugs won one team event – the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Blue, Ocelli Rivers Altieri, Paris Sinclair and Kaylie Walker finishing with a time of 3:44.57.
The next event for the Banana Slugs will be January 10th at 12 noon as they will host NCAA Division II CSU East Bay in a dual meet.
