Second Quarter Run Pushes Banana Slugs Past Yellow Jackets 82-58

SANTA CRUZ (2-16) – Kaylee Murphy had her second-straight double-double and senior CJ Catina had a career-high as UC Santa Cruz (5-5) completed their weekend with a twenty-four point second quarter to beat Howard Payne University 82-58 at West Field House. 

In the first quarter, the Banana Slugs started the game on a 15-4 run capped by Zion Gabriel's three-pointer  with 5:26 left in the quarter. From that point, the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-1 run to tie the game at 16-16 with 2:21 left before the Banana Slugs came back and led 20-19 after ten minutes.

The Yellow Jackets started the second quarter on a 5-0 spurt, capped by a Lily Janek three-pointer with 8:18 left in the half, for their largest lead of the ballgame at 24-20. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 10-0 run, capped by a Catina three-pointer, to take the lead for good at 30-24 with 5:36 left in the half. The lead would reach double digits at 38-28 on an Emily Mitchell layup with 2:56 left and the Banana Slugs led 44-32 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs gained their largest lead of the quarter at nineteen, at 55-36, on a Savannah Henson layup with 2:52 left. The Yellow Jackets came as close as fourteen, at 57-43, with 1:06 left but a Savannah Powell jumper gave the Banana Slugs a 59-43 lead at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Banana Slugs held the Yellow Jackets at arms' length and gained their largest lead of the ballgame at twenty-seven, at 82-55, after a pair of Kaylee Murphy free throws with 1:47 left.

Catina had a game-high twenty points for the Banana Slugs, including a career-high five three-pointers. Mitchell and Murphy had thirteen apiece in the win, with Murphy adding 17 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks. Chelsey Harris had eighteen points for the Yellow Jackets. 

The Banana Slugs shot 43.4% (23-53) from the field, 36% (9-25) from the three-point line and were 69.2% (27-39) from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets shot 29.7% (19-64) from the field, 25% (4-16) from the three-point line and 61.5% (16-26) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz scored sixteen points off fifteen Yellow Jacket turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Howard Payne 50-40 and the Banana Slugs had thirteen more second chance points (17-4) than did the Yellow Jackets.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be December 17th as they take on Monmouth College at Kaiser Permanente Arena at 7 pm.
