APTOS (12-28) – UC Santa Cruz opened the UCSC New Year's Classic losing to Pacific University. 67-59 at Cabrillo College.
In the first quarter, the Boxers started the game on a 6-0 run. The Banana Slugs would respond with a 10-0 run, capped by an Emily Mitchell three-pointer, to take the lead at 10-6 with 4:03 left in the quarter and would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at five, at 13-8, on an Ashley Kowack three-pointer with 1:14 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Boxers would chip away at the Banana Slugs' lead and would take the lead for good, at 20-18, on a Brille Kovaloff layup with 6:49 left in the half. The Boxers would lead 35-27 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Boxers would expand their lead to 41-31, on Cami Aguinaldo's layup with 8:09 left. The Boxers gained their largest lead of the ballgame at 50-33 with 3:37 left in the quarter and led 55-42 at the end of the third quarter .In the fourth quarter, the Banana Slugs would trim the Boxers' lead to seven, at 59-52, on a Kowack three-pointer, with 5:26 left. After the Boxers expanded their lead to double digits again, the Banana Slugs cut the Boxers' lead to six, at 65-59, on a CJ Catina three-pointer with nine seconds left.
Kowack had twenty points for the Banana Slugs, Mitchell had thirteen and Maddy Miller had seven along with a team-high 11 rebounds. Aguinaldo had a game-high twenty-two points for the Boxers.
The Banana Slugs shot 35.5% (22-62) from the field, 30.8% (8-26) from the three-point line and were 63.6% (7-11) from the free throw line. The Boxers shot 40.7% (24-59) from the field, 23.5% (4-17) from the three-point line and 57.7% (15-26) from the foul line.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Monday as they take on University of Dubuque at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Game time is set for 2 pm.
