UC Santa Cruz golf places 7th in first tournament of Spring

AUSTIN, TX - A youthful UC Santa Cruz squad placed 7th of 10 teams in the Linda Lowery Invitational hosted by Concordia University of Texas.

In the first outing of the spring, the Banana Slugs got seven strokes closer to winner Texas-Tyler on the second day. They finished with a team score of 787 (390-397), 147 strokes behind the Patriots who shot 640. Hardin-Simmons shot a team 662 to place second. Hosts Concordia placed third with 666.

"We had a young team on the course this event, 3 freshman and a first competitive round for sophomore Victoria Morales," head coach Paulette Pera said. 

Olivia Bean led UCSC with a 35-over 175 to place 22nd. Maia Dupuis placed 40th, shooting 196.

"Olivia, a senior,  had her best competitive round on Monday. She shot 81 and was in 5th place coming into today's round,"said Pera. "She had a hard time putting two good rounds together and ended up in 22nd place."

Kelsie Guinn of Hardin-Simmons won individual medalist honors with a 16-over 156 to beat UT-Tyler's Morgan Loth by one stroke.

UC Santa Cruz next takes to the links in April to host their UCSC Invitational in Pacific Grove.
