Women's tennis opens play in 117th Ojai Tournament

VENTURA - UC Santa Cruz opened the Ojai Tournament with matches in both singles and doubles.

In Independent Division singles matches played at the Pierpont Racquet Club, the Banana Slugs dropped their five individual matches. Claire Stoner,Vera Smekalina and Ashley Brudzinski were swept by Samantha Mae Coyiuto, Emily Chen and Joy Kim (all of Pomona-Pitzer) respectively. Zoë Brook fell to Cal Lutheran's Christie Kurdys. Abilene's Whitney Williams defeated Danielle Aparicio.

In doubles play, Aparicio teamed with Monica Guerrero against Madeline Heer/Kelsey Post of Biola, dropping the match in straight sets. The other two doubles teams had byes to the round of 16. Brook and Brudzinski dropped their match to Casper and Chen of Pomona, while Smekalina and Stoner defeated Caltech's Erin Wang and Kana Moriyama 6-4,6-4. They advance to the Quarterfinals to take on Pomona's Chen and Kim.
